Based on the exhibition of the same name in the Van Gogh Museum Amsterdam (also seen at the National Gallery in Melbourne), this film delve sinto the story of Van Gogh’s fascination with the art of Japan. With the usual thoroughness of the Exhibition on Screen products, Van Gogh and Japan features interviews with a variety of experts and draws on the many letters of Van Gogh in exploring the subject.
Of this work David Bickerstaff says : ‘The intensity of his fragile mind as he struggles with his art is laid bare with every mark he makes. It is the pursuit of a powerful simplicity that attracted Vincent Van Gogh to the art of Japan and the Japanese to his story.’
