The Heavens inspire the 2020 season with  works from Hildegard of Bingen via Dieterich Buxtehude to Gavin Bryars.

‘The spiritual in music has always been there – in the songlines and ritual traditions of First Peoples around the world to the enigmatic musical notation in the 3000-year-old Jewish Book of Psalms – and composers down the centuries have created some of their most enduring masterpieces on sacred texts.

Barbie speaks with Antony Pitts about the Song Company’s 2020 season

Hildegard’s “opera” for her singing sisters, Ordo Virtutum has a speaking part for the Devil, while the magnetic and uplifting Jesus’ Blood Never Failed Me Yet is built on the singing of a London tramp, combined with 32 voices in the Song Company’s collaborative world première performances of a new choral version by Gavin Bryars.

A clear blue sky means no rain on parched country; for someone without a roof over their heads it also means the burning sun, and for some it means no wind to bring their boat closer to land. Refugees seeking safe haven are the stimulus for both Australian composer Chris Williams’s new work, I pray the sea and Robert Macfarlane’s theatrical vision of Buxtehude’s masterwork Membra Jesu Nostri. ‘ (Song Company website)

The season also includes the new Ensemble Artists in Salon programmes of more familiar and entertaining repertoire and an ongoing series of Close-Up encounters with both Principal and Ensemble Artists.

There is a celebration of the physical side of music in the lovesongs and dances of Brahms’s Liebeslieder and Messiaen’s Harawi, traditional song from the Iberian Peninsula, as well as Robert Schumann, Elvis Presley, Enrique Granados, and the 250-year-old Beethoven. Cross-arts collaborations include those with Karul Projects, Taryn Fiebig, and The Tallis Scholars.
