Strathnairn until 22 July
This beautiful exhibition by Emily Birks is the result of a year-long residency at Mulligans Flat, a nature reserve surrounded by a predator-proof fence in the north of Canberra. Emily’s exhibition focusses on vulnerable species and is a collection of detailed sensitively rendered ink paintings.
Emily says in her artist statement:
I loved being offered an insight into the research being done by scientists in the sanctuary. Over the year, I helped take notes on a bettong trapping expedition in the middle of the night, tracked echidnas with radio tags and counted native lilies. I met ‘education bettong’ Banksia and spotted tawny frogmouth fledglings and sugar gliders on night tours. Independently, I saw so many bird species for the first time. Mulligans Flat has more than 160 species that call the Sanctuary home.
Emily will be at Strathnairn over the weekends of her exhibition. Do pay her a visit and consider the issues her work raises.
